Abstract

892,215. Cutting sheet material S.T.E.F.A.S.- SOC. R.I. March 11, 1958 [March 16, 1957; Nov. 15, 1957], No. 7715/58. Class 31 (1). [Also in Group XXII] A shears for cutting sheet, e.g. plastic, consists of a frame having a base 15, two substantially vertical walls 16, 18 carrying the disc blades 20, 21 and a horizontal plate 17 joining the rear portions 16b, 18b of the walls 16, 18. The plate 17 is of wedge section and the rear portions 16b, 18b are oppositely curved to facilitate making curved cuts. The disc blades are driven either manually through a lever and ratchet device or by a motor and are connected by gearing. The blades may be mounted in adjustable bushes to vary the distance between the blade axes. The disc blades may be in the form of slot-cutting rollers, forming rollers, e.g. as shown in Fig. 7, or by scalloped or shaped blades to make shaped cuts or cuts in corrugated sheets. The blades may be heated by internal resistance heaters 58, Fig. 8, to which current is fed by brushes 59. One disc may be eccentrically mounted to enable blind cuts to be made. The shears may have an arm 43, Fig. 11, carrying a guide 53 or a gauging stop and a rotatable work-holder 45 for cutting circles. The gearing of the shears may be used to provide a reciprocating motion to the arm 43 or a steady transverse motion to make wavy and helical cuts respectively. Straightening rolls to straighten the severed strip may be mounted on the shear frame.
