[Also in Group XI] In a navigational beacon emitting within a so-called ranging sector of predetermined angular extent a sharply defined beam, the beam is divided into a plurality of narrow light channels arranged to have a mutual angular displacement so as to spread the light intensity over the ranging sector to give high intensity adjacent the boundaries of the ranging sector. As shown in Fig. 1, the source 1, of substantially parallel light, is divided into three channels 6, 7, 8 by screens 2 to 5, of which 2 and 5 define the sector angle, while 3 and 4 prevent the emission of light through non-aligned apertures of 2 and 5. If it is arranged that the angular displacement between channels be half the angle of divergence v‹ of each channel, the light distribution in channels 6, 7, 8 will be as shown at 9, 10, 11 (Fig. 4), and for a normal viewing distance the light distribution within the sector will be as indicated in Fig. 5. A second embodiment in which the ranging sector is flanked by lateral sectors of different coloured light is shown in Fig. 6. The sector boundaries are defined by screens 21, 22, while screens 19, 20 split the ranging sector into three channels, and screens such as 26, 27 split each of the lateral sectors into eight channels, 17 and 18 being colour filters. The light distribution is as indicated in Fig. 9; the screens 26 being parallel to one another, and the screens 27 diverging with respect to one another.
