[Also in Group XXI] Parking positions in an undergound mechanical garage comprise verticallyspaced vehicle-supporting shelves secured to opposite walls of a shaft, each shelf comprising two rows of tines, the shelves being loaded and unloaded by means of a platform which is horizontally movable on an elevator frame and which is provided with vehicle - supporting members which co-operate in comb-like relationship with the tines. As shown in Fig. 1, a vehicle to be parked is lowered through a hatchway 2 on a platform 8, which is lowered on a guided framework 7, to the level of a vacant parking position and which is then moved horizontally on the framework 7, by means of a motor-driven pinion 11 engaging a rack 12, until vertical plates 9, supporting the vehicle on platform 8, have moved between the tines 5 of the parking position. The platform is then lowered slightly, so that the vehicle is supported on the tines 5, after which the platform is moved to the centre of the framework 7 which is then returned to its starting position. The parking and removal of cars is carried out automatically from a central control board showing the vacant parking spaces. In a further embodiment, tines 25, Figs. 7, 8, extend from walls 19 in a cylindrical shaft and are supported on shelves 20, and a lift 26, provided between the columns of shelves, is moved on guides 28 by means of ropes extending from counterweights 33, Fig. 9 (not shown), over a winch and pulleys on the lift to a fixed point at the top of the shaft. The platform of lift 26 is formed of tubes 48 supported on a beam 47 which is mounted on two beams 44, Fig. 10, slidable in channels 42 on the lift towards the parking shelves by cables and motor-driven pulleys. Above the inlet to the shaft, a roof is provided which is supported by posts 69, Fig. 7, the posts being slidable within bores provided in a horizontal cover slab 70 and resting on brackets carried by the elevator frame. On lowering the elevator, the roof is lowered until it rests on the inlet to the shaft.
