Abstract

891,887. Surgical injection appliances. STATO A.G. May 30, 1958 [May 31, 1957], No. 17298/58. Class 81 (2). An automatic, hypodermic injection appliance having a spring-loaded plunger for inserting the needle and making the injection, has an end cap which guides the ampoule and needle and also, when detached and inverted, is used for compressing the spring for subsequent use. The spring 20 is held within the tubular body 1 and is compressed, at one end, against a locating member 11 in the body and, at the other end, against a flange on the plunger assembly 9. It is normally held compressed by spring blades 10, attached to the assembly 9, the upper ends of which pass through and engage over the upper face of the member 11. However, when the release knob 13 is depressed, the cylindrical insert 14 compresses these blades radially so that they are disengaged from the member 11 and the plunger 8 is driven downwards. Initially it contacts the ampoule stopper 31 and, thereafter, the resistance to flow of the liquid medicament 30 through the needle 29 causes the ampoule and needle to be projected rapidly downwards, after which the contents are ejected through the needle. The lower end of the needle is initially sealed by a rubber stopper 35 and the ampoule is fitted with a tubular sheath 36, which guides it as it moves downwards. This sheath is held in the end cap 3 to hold it rigid during use but, after an injection has been made, the end cap 3 is removed, together with the ampoule, and then inverted so that its end 5 can be used to bear against the plunger and compress the spring 20. The release knob has a form of bayonet connection with the body, so that it can be locked to prevent unintentional discharge of the contents.
