Abstract

891,832. Sawing. BLACK & DECKER MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 4, 1960 [April 4, 1960], No. 27028/60. Class 145. A jig saw has a blade-carrying shaft 40 reciprocated by an eccentric pin 37 on a gear 32 rotated by a motor 22 and an additional slight pivoting motion about a pivot 41 is applied by a saddle 54 which is fixed to the shaft 40 and has a pair of angularly offset slots 64 engaging with a pair of rotatable pins 66 fixed in the tool casing. The pin 37 engages by means of a roller 38 in a yoke 39 secured to the shaft by a rivet 62 and a longitudinal radius on the roller reduces the shear stress on the pin. The pitch and rotation of the gear 32 are such that it is forced against a shoulder on a stub shaft 33, thus obviating the need for mechanical holding means, and it is counterbalanced by holes drilled in it. The pivot pin 41 is loaded at its ends by arcuate leaf springs. The saw blade 45 is held in the shaft 40 by an aluminium insert 44 and two screws 46 at right angles to each other. A portion of the ventilating air drawn through the motor is discharged through a passage 53 on to the blade. At least the forward portion of the casing is constructed in two halves.
