Abstract
891,559. Tamping machines. RACINE HYDRAULICS & MACHINERY Inc. Feb. 3, 1960 [May 25, 1959], No. 3801/60. Class 107 [Also in Groups XXI and XXIII] A self-contained material compacting device comprises a frame 10 with an elongated frame section 11 which slidably and non-rotatably mounts a drive piston 60 and a driven piston 12 to which a compacting shoe 13 is attached. A crank shaft 32 is driven by a motor 14 via gearing 30, 31 and a reciprocating drive is transmitted to the drive piston 60 via connecting rod 36. The frame section 11 has a hollow interior similar in cross-section to the pistons and opposed elongated slots 68, 69 extend along a major part of its length. The drive piston 60 and driven piston 12 are formed with ears 66, 67 and 70, 71, respectively, which extend through the opposed slots 68, 69 and to which springs connecting the two pistons are attached. Two sets of three concentric springs 62, 63 transmit downward motion from drive piston 60 to driven piston 12 and tamping shoe 13, and the piston 12 and shoe 13 resiliently follow the upward movement of drive piston 60 via two sets of two concentric springs 64 and 65. The lower ends of spring sets 64, 65 are connected to the piston 60 via rods 83 and 84.
