Abstract
891,416. Abrasive wheels. CARBORUNDUM CO. Aug. 31,1959 [Nov. 14,1958], No. 29600/59. Class 60. An abrasive wheel comprises a pair of hub members detachably connectable to one another to form a hub, a flange on each of said hub members, an annular bead extending inwardly from the inner face of each flange, said beads being concentrically disposed with respect to said hub members, and a plurality of laminiferous segments, each of said segments comprising a plurality of similar sheets of flexible material supporting an abrasive material, the sheets being secured to one another at one end only, and a notch in each side of each segment near the end of the segment where the sheets are secured to one another, said notches being complementary in shape to the beads on said flanges, said beads and notches co-operating to anchor securely said plurality of laminiferous segments in position when the latter have been loaded between the two hub members with their notches aligned with the annular beads and the hub members have been connected to one another. Interfitting hub members 10, 12 have flanges 11, 13 provided with annular beads 20, 21. Hub member 10 has bolt-receiving bores 17 and the hub member 12 has threaded bolt-securing holes .18. Segments 14 are each made up of a plurality of similar sheets 15 coated with abrasive material on one side thereof and adhesively secured to one another at their one ends; notches receive the beads 20, 21. The adhesive may be such that a segment can be broken into smaller segments by pulling apart the free ends of the sheets. The sheets may be of soft cloth coated or impregnated with an abrasive buffing or polishing compound and may then be secured together by stitching instead of by adhesive. The sheets may have a contour appropriate to the work to be done. The combined weight of the hub members 10, 12 is appreciably greater than the total weight of the segments 14.
