Abstract

891,337. Bearing bushes. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. July 24, 1958 [Aug. 16, 1957], No. 23896/58. Class 12 (1). A light marine bearing, for supporting the propeller shaft e.g. of a boat and composed of non-conductive materials which eliminate corrosion and electrolytic action, comprises concentric supporting and bearing sleeves 1, 2 which are made respectively of moulded plastic material, e.g. phenolic resin reinforced with a fibreglass fabric 5, and rubber or synthetic rubber. The heat and pressure to which the rubber is subjected during pressure moulding displaces a certain amount of rubber into the interstices of the fibre glass projecting from the inner surface of the supporting sleeve to provide a mechanical bond between the two materials. Preferably a chemical cement, or bonding agent, is also employed to enhance the bond of the rubber to the plastic resin. The bearing sleeve 2 has a series of longitudinally extended grooves 3 for the passage of water through the bearing.
