891,204. Shearing; breaking. COMMISSARIAT A. L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. April 29, 1960 [May 4, 1959], No. 15175/60. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XL (a)] A method of severing the cylindrical casing 1 of irradiated fissile material &c. 4 comprises clamping the casing between jaws 6 in one plane and between jaws 10 in another plane, and maintaining the first jaws 6 stationary while rotating jaws 10 in the clamped state. The part severed rotates with jaws 10, torsion causing severance except for ribs 3 on the casing, which are sheared between the jaws 6, 10, as described below. A jaw 6, Fig. 9, and an adjacent similar jaw 10 are provided for each flute defined by the ribs 3, constructions using 2, 4 or 6 jaws in each set also being referred to. The jaws 6 are closed by engagement between cam surfaces C, Fig. 8, on a disc 7 and abutments B on the jaws, and opened by pegs 49 on the jaws engaging inclined slots 50 in the disc. A similar disc 11, Fig. 10, operates the jaws 10, which are in guides 48 in a rotatable disc 47 having an arm 17 to which an upward pressure is constantly applied by a rod 23. The work is guided in a channel 19 and fed intermittently by a pusher 20 operated by a cable 21, pulleys 22 and a ratchet mechanism 39, 40. Return of the pusher is by a hand wheel 52. A feed-stop 5 is mounted on links 18, 37 controlled by a rod 24. Rotation of the cam discs 7, 11 is by rods 8, 12, and the rods 8, 12, 23, 24 and feed-pawl 39 may be operated by pneumatic cylinders 25-29 remote from the work, which may be immersed in water or insulated by lead, concrete, &c. Operation.-The work is fed against the stop 5 and the feeding pressure maintained while the work is clamped and impressions formed therein by teeth 9 on the jaws through operation of cylinder 25. The stop is lowered by cylinder 36, and the other jaws 10 are closed by cylinder 46. Continued pressure by cylinder 46 rotates the cam-disc 11, jaws 10, disc 47 and the work as a unit, shearing the ribs 3 between the jaws and severing the casing by torsion at the junction between sections of the fissile material. After return of the discs 7, 11 and 47, pusher 20 completes its stroke and ejects the severed end of the work into a reception channel.
