Description
UNITED-I STATES l PATENT OFFICE.
wi Emmi fr. inenAnns, oF
MACHINERY EMPLOYED IN THE MANUFACTURE 0F COlLED-WlRE FERlllJLES.
To (tl/f whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that l, Wi LLL-m T. weakens,
State of (,onnecticut, hare inventeda new and 4 useful Improvement in Machinery for-lllaklng XVirc Ferrules; and I do hereby declare that the following is a-full, clear, andexaet description ol' thcfconstrnction, character, and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this speclieation, inwhifeh- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front part'of the machine. f Fig. 2 is a plan view ol an upright section ofl the same. Fig. 3 isa plan view ol' the crank which. works the die to cut the wire. Fig.tis a perspective View of a ferrule made ready for use.
My improvement consists' in the use of a mandrel or rod to'sustainthe helical coil olI -wire,'a clamp worked by'a cam to hold the coil while being eut, a seinicircular die worked by a crank lto eut oil' the coil, .and a gage worked by a lever andcain to throw the severed pai-toll'.
I. make the framework of cast-iron or other suitable material, which consists of a bedf plate, A, and an upright part, l1.
Near the outer endet' the-bed-plate A, l Hx a movable stud, C, to which l. attach a mandrel or rod, l), ont-o which the helical coil of wire is passed. As .th-e stud C- is capable of -beingturncd round, the innerend of the man-v drel D may be swung out so as to slip on the c`o il a'with perfect con vel'iienee, audit is steadied by abloek, l. l
.In the center ol' thelower end of the. upright part l5, l secure in a propeisocket a short mandrel, c, ontov which the coil is to be passed (from the mandrel] )l a sullicient distance for the lengt-hol a ferrule, with a gage, (I, to determine the length and to throw oil' the part `of the coil when severed.
In the center of theupright part Il, I lit the mainslide E, which carries the cutting-die F.'
ln the back or inner side of the main slide E, I tit a secondary slide, which carries at' its' lower end. a concave or semicircular clamp or holder, h, Fig. 2, to hold the coil' firmly on vthe short mandrel c while being cut oil bythe cutting-die F. 'lhis slideg is forced down by, the cam G working on thehietion-roller1', and is removed or thrown up by the'spiral spring H, Fig. 2.
To the back side of the upright part B, I attach a bent lever, l, working on a fulcrninpin, j, Fig. 2. The upper end of this lever is yforced outward by the cam 1.1, which carries the lower end'lbrward, and, by means 0f the -two rods Z i', works the? gage-d to throw the severed piece of the coil from the short mand rel c, and it is thrown back by the spring K, Fig. 2. 'I helength of the lerrule is regulated by the nut m., Fig. 2.
llaving constructed and arranged the several parts of the machine, and the wire haring passed onto the mandi-chimie mandrel resting on the block b and gaged as toits direction by the sct-scie\\' n,) l. feed the coil forward by hand until it passes onto ihcsliort mandrel c dart, when the crank on the arbor e will bring '.'orc'e down the secondary slide g, so as to press the clamp or holdcih onto the coil, while the main slide lil, continuing to descend, will bring theedge ol`I the cutting-'die .li over the upper edge ol' the short mandrel f' .and cut the wire at right angles to the axis oi the coil, so as to completely sever the parts, leaving both ends true and smooth. '.lhe cam G will then release the secondary slide g, and the spiral spring H will throw the slide y up toits l'ormer position, and the crank, by the continued motion 0l' the wheel L, will raise the .main slide E to its former place. At the saine timethe cani k will, by means of the levers l. force the gage (l for 'ward and throw oil' the piece of coil thus severed, which will full through the opening at M into a proper receptacle, and the machine will be ready for another operation.
in the rapidity and cheapness with which the fel-rules are made and the regularity ot' their forms, as any required quantity can be made of exact size and proportions, even by a child.
Iam aware that clamps-or holders and cutting-dies 'havebeen worked by cranks and by been coiled in the-usual way, and the coil.-
up to the l'aee ol' the guard 7; l then revolve the wheel L in the direction indicated by the down-the main slide E, while the ca in G- willl 4 The advantages of my improvements consist cams. I therefore-do not claim these as such l 2. The combination of the method olentting as my invention; but .l n v ll theeoil, as described above, with the method What claim as lily-invention, and desire lo of supportingv the long coil, and of feeding it, secure by Letters Patent, is and of throwing oil.' the piece when severed, 1. The method of cutting the wire at right when combined, arranged, and operated sub- .mglesto the axis of the coils, se that the ends stnntinlly as herein described.
of the fe'rrnies will be perfectly true, without wasting any of the Stock, by the use of the v VM. T. RII'IARDS. short mandrel c', the clamp or holder and the eutting-die F, when the innrhine is oonf Witnesses:
strueted, arranged, and made toopemte .Qn h. S. RANSUM,
Stautia'iiy :is herein described. R. FlrzomeALu.
