Abstract

Loose fibres of specified kinds of peat or peat moss, e.g sphagnum moss or Eriophorum Vaginatum, are used in cigar or cigarette filter tips or in plastic cartridges in cigar or cigarette holders or tobacco pipes. The peat or moss is dried naturally or in a centrifuge or press, washed, carded, again dried, bleached in chlorine water to remove humic acid and clean the capillaries, again washed, and, after a further drying including heating, again carded. The peat or moss may be initially sprayed with ferric chloride solution. In a cigarette filter tip having a paper or plastic wrapper, the peat or moss fibres may be randomly or axially arranged. The peat or moss fibres may also be introduced between the folds or coils of a crepe paper or cellulosic film filter.
