Abstract

A filter tip cigarette is provided with a plug or wad of activated carbon separate from the filter tip and preferably interposed between the filter tip and tobacco. The activated carbon may be formed by charring the end of the tobacco portion prior to the filter tip being joined thereto. In machines in which alternate double length filter tip and tobacco portions are joined and then bisected, both ends of a stack of double length tobacco portions are carbonized simultaneously by a pair of plates heated to about 600 DEG C. In a modification a disc or plug of activated carbon is interposed between the tobacco portion and filter tip.
