Abstract

1,235,880. Tobacco-smoke filters. BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO. Ltd. 12 Nov., 1969 [11 Dec., 1968], No. 58831/68. Heading A2C. A tobacco-smoke filter comprises fibrous, filamentary or sheet tobacco-smoke filtering material treated with a stable, involatile, free radical containing substance of general formula RR<SP>1</SP>NO<SP>0</SP> wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are radicals whose nature may vary considerably and may be an alkyl, aromatic, alicyclic, heterocyclic or polycyclic group. The nitroxide group itself may be part of a cyclic or polycyclic sytem. In the examples, paper filtering material is sprayed with aqueous or alcoholic solutions of 9-oxyl-bicyclo- (3,3,1)-nonan-3-one or 1-nitronyl-3-oxyl 4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-phenyldihydromidazole. The use of 1-oxyl-3-nitronyl-4,5- phenanthro-2-methyldihydroimidazole is also contemplated. The filters are particularly effective in removing nitric oxide from tobacco smoke.
