Abstract

1414688 Cigarette filters COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION 2 Aug 1973 [16 Aug 1972] 36728/73 Heading A2C Ciliatoxic smoke components are removed by passage through a filter containing a single compound or mixture of compounds comprising a cationic component which is any organic compound or group having one or more functional groups bearing a positive charge and a polyamine component having a molecular weight in excess of 500. Polyethylamines and polyvinylamines if desired cross linked with diisocyanates, diepoxides and alkyl dihalides may constitute the required polyamine and quaternary ammonium, phosphonium and sulphonium compounds may provide the necessary cationic compounds. These materials may be supported on conventional filter materials e.g. wool, cellulose acetate, viscose, cotton, rayon and polyesters. Bonded fabric and powdered forms of filter may be used of which paper may form part. Comparative examples describe how filters are made and examine their ability to remove HCN, H.CHO, CH 3 CHO, CH 2 =CHCHO, and C 6 H 5 OH.
