Abstract
890,372. Refrigerators; non-conducting coverings for heat. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Jan. 22, 1960 [Jan. 27, 1959], No. 2405/60. Classes 29 and 64(2) The parallel face walls 10, 12 of an evacuated insulation panel are supported against atmospheric pressure by hollow columns 36 the flat ends of which bear on the inner surfaces of the walls. The cross-section of the columns may be circular, elliptical or rectangular and the columns have apertures 38 to put their interiors under vacuum. The colums may take through apertures in fibre-board sheets 40, located by pins 41, so that buckling is minimized. The evacuated space may be filled by insulating powder or alternate layers of fibrous insulation and reflective foils. The edges of the walls are spaced by a U-shaped plastic member 14 and sealed by a thin stainless steel sheet 24 welded to out-turned flanges 20, 22 on the walls. The panel has a vacuum connection 32 and a getter device 34. The columns may be made of glass, quartz, ceramic or glass-fibre reinforced melamine formaldehyde resin.
