Abstract

Destructive animals such as shipworm which bore into submarine structures, are killed by scalding them with either hot water or steam. The hot water or steam is conveyed to the structure under treatment, at a pressure above that of the surrounding sea water, through a heat-insulated conduit which is preferably provided at its outlet end with interchangeable nozzles. The conduit may be controlled from the land or a vessel by means of a long handling rod, or from beneath the water surface. In the latter case the nozzles are preferably provided with control valves. Suitable poisonous or impregnation substances may be added to the steam or water.
