Abstract

889,982. Carburetters. ENGINEERING RESEARCH & APPLICATION Ltd. June 10, 1960 [April 10, 1959], No. 12183/59. Class 7(3). A carburetter has means for metering the fuel and air including a fuel and air mixing chamber, an air flow control device 40 at the air entrance end of the mixing chamber, a throttle valve 31 at the outlet end of the mixing chamber and a fuel flow control device 33 in the fuel duct to the mixing chamber, the fuel flow control device being uncontrolled by any connections to the air flow control device or the throttle, the rate of fuel supply being varied only by the variation of pressure in the mixing chamber and the devices being such that the difference between the mixing chamber pressure and atmosphere pressure is substantially directly proportional to the quantity of fuel and air flowing into the mixing chamber. In Fig. 2 the lower part of the duct 25 communicates with the float chamber 22 by a passage 33 across which is a porous plate 34 and a gasket 35 having two fuel control openings therein (only one 36 being shown). In the air inlet opening is a plate or reed valve 40 which is controlled by the air flow. A porous plate and gasket may be provided either at 30 (in place of the valve member 40) or at 33 or at both places and a valve member 40 may be provided at 30 or 33 or at both 30 and 33. The porous plate may be replaced by a pack of corrugated plates. The pivoted plate member 40 may be replaced by a flexible plate or reed secured to a plate over an opening therein. The latter plate will be disposed across the opening 30 and/or 33. The fuel may be caused to pass through a multiplicity of small passages formed by a wad of felt, paper, porous ceramic, sintered metal or other porous material or a matrix of corrugated material so wrapped or folded as to provide a multiplicity of passages.
