Abstract
889,664. Selective printing processes. RANKXEROX Ltd. May 21, 1958 [June 6, 1957], No. 16354/58. Classes 100(2) and 100(4) An electrostatic selective printer comprises a constantly rotating character drum 13 which when pulses are received by electrodes 16 from a block 17 causes electrostatic images of metallic elements 15 to be formed on an endless tape 10 of flexible material of high resistivity. If the tape is fed continuously the drum 13 is set askew so that a straight line of images is formed. The images are developed by powder falling over a roller 12 at 21 and are then transferred to a paper strip 22 by a roller 24 given a stronger charge of opposite polarity to that of powder images. After transfer the images are fused by heating elements 27 and the record strip 22 is then taken up on a roller 25. After the images have been transferred the web 10 is cleaned as by brushes 28 and is then given a preselected uniform charge at a station 20 before again reaching the drum 13. In a modification the tape 10 is replaced by a metallic band having a thin insulating layer coated thereon and the drum 13 is replaced by a drum having a series of character rings connected to commutator rings but insulated from each other. In this example the drum is set straight across the band which is fed intermittently line by line. In other modifications the tape is replaced by a metallic drum having an insulating surface and the characters are formed by a pattern of dots either by lines of five pins actuated sequentially to form characters on a continuously moving drum or by seven rows of five pins actuated simultaneously for each character. Specifications 675,398, 888,438 and 889,663 are referred to.
