Abstract
<PICT:0889563/III/1> Apparatus for evaporating, mixing, reacting or otherwise treating flowable materials in the form of a film comprises a stationary casing 18 having a tapering portion 48, a rotary shaft 26 extending through the casing, and a plurality of vanes 46 attached to a rotor 44 associated with the shaft, each vane being of about the same length as the tapering portion of the casing and the edge of each vane running close to the wall of the tapering portion. Material to be treated enters the casing at 52 and the product leaves at 54. Optional features of the apparatus include (1) means whereby the shaft 26 can be moved longitudinally, so as to vary the clearance between the edges of the vanes and the tapering portion of the casing, (2) a jacket 20 for heating or cooling, (3) a vapour outlet 56 and a baffle 50 which separates from the vapour any solid or liquid particles which it may carry, and (4) means for placing the apparatus under increased or reduced pressure. Alternative forms of apparatus are described (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) in which the casing is vertically mounted, the narrower end of the tapering portion, and the inlet or the outlet for the material to be treated, being either at the bottom or at the top.
