889,190. Lubricating bearings. WEIR Ltd., G. & J. Dec. 4, 1959 [Dec. 16, 1958], No. 40517/58. Class 12 (3). A turbine - driven centrifugal pump for a boiler feed system, comprises a turbine wheel 1 and a pump impeller 2 on a common driving shaft 3 mounted in bearings 4, 5 interposed between them, the bearings being lubricated with the boiler feed water and the turbine and pump being contained in a common casing 13, 19, 18. The bearings are of plastic or carbon. The axial thrust of the turbine is taken by a thrust ring 14 or, under certain conditions, by a thrust ring 16. Cool water is injected through a connection 20 by the bearings, some of the water passing to the turbine exhaust by way of passages 22, 23 and the rest to the pump suction chamber 11 leading from the feed water connection 12. If the temperature of the feed water passing through the connection 12 is low enough, the connection 20 may be omitted. Pressure in the space 11 then rises until the same quantity of water is flowing to the bearings as leaks between the impeller rings 7 and the wear rings 10. Since the whole assembly is enclosed in a single casing, the pump is suitable for dealing with radio-active fluids.
