Abstract

888,817. Endless conveyers. F.M.C. CORPORATION. Oct. 14, 1959 [Dec. 10, 1958], No. 34791/59. Class 78 (1). Cartons C having outwardly-projecting end flaps F, F<SP>1</SP> are advanced by means of a feed conveyer 12 on to support surfaces 118 of a spacing conveyer 14, the leading carton thereon being advanced by the following cartons until temporarily stopped by the engagement of the leading edge of the lower flap F with a shoe 18 which is urged about a pivot 124<SP>1</SP> against plate 118 by means of a spring 133 with sufficient pressure to allow the carton past only when the carton is driven by lugs 16 which are spaced at predetermined intervals along the endless chains 74, 76 of the spacing conveyer 14. The cartons are thus fed at predetermined spacings from the conveyer 14 to the conveyer 20 of a carton closing machine 8, any cartons which are raised out of the normal position at the end of conveyer 14 being detected by means of an arm 170 secured to a rotatable shaft 172 which is provided with an arm to actuate a switch which cuts out the drive to the conveyers 12, 14, 20. The cartons are guided by means of guide plates 24, 26, and guides 116, 116a which are adjustable by means of bolts 162 and a screw 152 and which are provided with abutments 146 to arrest a carton which has been raised on top of a pair of lugs 16 until these lugs have passed from undereneath the carton and the following lugs engage the carton in the normal manner. Endless chains 56, 58 of the conveyer 12 are tensioned by means of a spring 50 which is compressed between a fixed cross member 38 provided with a splined aperture through which a splined rod 40 passes, and an abutment 52 on the rod, the rod being secured to a bearing block 42 for a shaft 44 which carries sprockets 46, 48.
