Abstract

888,654. Efluent purification. RAINE, J. C. Sept. 16, 1958 [Sept. 18, 1957], No. 29420/57. Class 41. In a manufacturing process involving the production of an effluent consisting substantially of water and impurities having an oxygen absorptive capacity, derived from a tar distillation plant and containing phenols, thiosulphates, thiocyanates and chlorides, the effluent is electrolysed so as to liberate oxidizing gases which react with the impurities to decrease the oxygen absorptive capacity of the effluent. The cathode may be of iron, and the anode of platinum or carbon; the preferred voltage is 3 to 4 volts at an anode c.d. of 0.5 to 0.8 amps./ sq. inch.
