Abstract

In the manufacture of a preservative wrapping or packaging material for foodstuffs, e.g. meat, fish, poultry, a base sheet, e.g. cf paper, regenerated cellulose film, cloth, plastic film, is coated or impregnated with a solution comprising 2 to 5 grams of an antibiotic dissolved in a litre of an aqueous solution containing 25 to 75% by weight of a monohydric alcohol, e.g. ethyl, propyl, or isopropyl alcohol, which contains 2 to 3 carbon atoms per molecule. Suitable antibiotics include chlortetracycline, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, polymixin B, neomycin or streptomycin, singly or in admixture, the treated sheet preferably containing 5 to 25 milligrams per square metre of surface area. The solution preferably has a surface tension of less than 35 degrees per centimetre and may be applied to the base sheet by spraying, roller coating or immersion of the sheet in the solution followed by gentle drying. The sheet material may be lacquered on one surface, e.g. with nitrocellulose.
