Abstract

888,146. Moulding hats &c. AMERICAN FELT CO. Oct. 27, 1958 [Nov. 25, 1957], No. 34345/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups VII and VIII] Moulded articles, e.g. hats, are formed from a material comprising a layer of woven fabric consisting of thermoplastic synthetic fibres which are under tension and shrink when heated and a layer of fibres in the form of a carded batt needle-felted to one or both sides of the woven fabric (see Group VIII). As shown, an oval blank 4 is placed on the ring 9 and clamped in place by the top ring 10. A bank of infra-red lamps 12 is swung down and the lights switched on the heat the fabric. The lights are then turned off and raised, while a die 14 rises through the rings causing the shrunk material to take the shape of the die. Steam heating may be used, but dry heating is preferred.
