Abstract
758,036. Embossing. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Feb. 28, 1955 [March . 1, 1954], No. 5947/54. Class 100 (2). A process for embossing surface patterns on a sheet of thermoplastic material consists of heating the sheet to soften it and then urging it into contact with an air-permeable fibrous web, carrying the desired pattern, by creating a vacuum on the other side of the web, allowing the sheet to cool and then stripping it off the web. The web 15 is a patterned fabric, e.g. lace, and is supported on a sheet of wire mesh 14 resting on a perforated platform 11 in a vacuum cup 10. The thermoplastic sheet 17 is stretched over the mouth of the cup and sealed thereagainst by a clamping ring 16. A radiant heater 19 is mounted on rails so as to be movable into and out of position over the mouth of the cup 10. When the sheet 17 is sufficiently softened the heater is moved away and the tap 22 at the bottom of the cup opened to connect the cup with an evacuated chamber. The atmospheric pressure on the upper side of the sheet then forces it into intimate contact with the fabric 15 so that the pattern is transferred to the sheet 17. When the sheet is cooled it is stripped off and the process repeated with another thermoplastic sheet. The cooling may be assisted, e.g. by air blast if necessary and extra pressure may be applied on the upper side of the sheet if desired. Examples are given in which a thermoplastic sheet of cellulose acetate, dimethyl phthalate and triphenyl phosphate is embossed by contact with webs consisting of lace having a floral pattern or of surgical lint having on the upper side a fluffy brushed surface. In the first case the lace pattern is transferred to the plastic sheet and in the second case a matt surface is produced. The web may alternatively consist of a crepe fabric, velvet, satin, knitted, woven or other fabrics.
