Abstract

888,069. Fluid heaters. YUBA CONSOLIDATED INDUSTRIES Inc. Oct. 8, 1958 [Nov. 14, 1957; June 25, 1958], No. 32080/58. Classes 64(1) and 64(3) A fluid heater comprises a cylindrical combustion chamber 10 having upwardly a discharging burner or burners 20 at its lower end, vertical tubes 21 located within and near the wall of the chamber and constituting a radiant heating section of the heater, and a supplementary chamber 16 of smaller cross-section than the combustion chamber mounted above the latter and containing a group of tubes 30 portions of which extend below the chamber 16 into the top of the combustion chamber to a point below the top of the tubes 21, the tubes 30 forming a combined radiant and convection heating section 38 of the heater, at least the outer tubes of the heating section 38 being smooth, whilst the remaining portions of the tubes 30 lying within the supplementary chamber 16 are provided with sectionary heating surfaces preferably in the form of pin fins, Fig. 7, not shown. In the apparatus shown, the combustion and supplementary chambers are interconnected through a frusto-conical shell section 15 provided with one or more covered manholes 26 for the removal and replacement of tubes when necessary. The tubes 21 are supported by brackets 24 and the tubes 30 are suspended from cross-rods or a grill 27. Fluid to be heated passes either in two parallel-connected streams (Fig. 2) or in a single stream (Fig. 6, not shown) first through the tubes 30 and then through the tubes 21. The combined radiant and convection heating section 38 of the tubes 30 may comprise a bank of finned tubes surrounded by a bank of smooth tubes (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown). The return bends interconnecting the main tubes may be provided with clean out plugs or may be removable.
