Description
Oct. 5, 1937. E. I. BROWN COMBINED HEATING AND COOKING UNIT Filed June 3, 1936 rI/IIIIIIIII/Illfflilllilln Patented Oct. 5, 1937 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE COMBINED HEATING AND COOKING UNIT Edward I. Brown, Bruce Crossing, Mich.
Application June 3, 1936, Serial No. 83,399
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a combined heating and cooking unit and it generally aims to provide a structure whereby a range or the like may be used in the ordinary manner, and in addition may have its heat imparted to a hot water heating system.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:-
Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through an improved stove according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a front end elevation of the heating unit;
Figure 4 is a rear end elevation of the heating unit;
Figure 5 is a detail section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3; and
Figure 6 is a detail section taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, the range or the equivalent is shown at [0 of which II is the oven. According to the invention, an improved fire box structure is provided at I2 being generally rectangular and hollow so that it may retain water, the front having an opening I2 therein in line with the door M of the stove or range. The box 12 has a tapered pot l3 wherein the coal or fuel is deposited and one side wall is cut away adjacent the top as at l5, so that the products of combustion may pass through the usual space I6 above the oven and escape through a discharge flue or chimney IT. The fuel is supported within the pot l3 by means of a coil l8.
Water supplied from any suitable source enters the coil I8 and the space within the fire box l2 through pipes l9 and it leaves such space and the fire pot by means of pipes 20, leading to hot Water heating systems or the like. It will be noted that portions of the lower wall of the fire box 52 are arched as at 21 so as to fit over the coils l8 and further it will be noted that the pipes l9 and 29 include connections 22 and 23 where- 5 by the coils may be detached for inspection or replacement.
In order to extract the maximum heat from the fuel and utilize it in the same hot water heating system in connection with which the fuel box 10 i2 is used, or for use in any other desired way, an auxiliary coil 2% generally of skeleton form, rests upon the top of the oven II. This coil has communicating transverse tubes 25- and longitudinal tubes 26, the latter preferably being pointed at 15 the top so that soot and ashes will less readily fall and rest thereon. The structure also enables ready cleaning by means of a scraper or the like. The water to the coils 25-26, is supplied from any suitable source through a pipe 2] and it leaves or circulates therefrom through a pipe t will be noted that certain lugs 29 rise from parts of the coil 2526 and support the top 30 of the stove. 25
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
A cooking and heating stove having a fire box, 30
a rectangular, hollow water container surrounding the fire box, said fire box being open at top and bottom, one end portion of said container having notches in its lower surface, a water supply pipe connected to the container, a coil within the fire 35 box having an inlet pipe connected to thefirst mentioned pipe and having an outlet pipe, said inlet and outlet pipes being disposed in said notches whereby the coil is arranged above the base of the container, the walls of the fire box 40 fiaring downwardly and inwardly, and one of the side walls of the container being depressed to permit the discharge of products of combustion.
