Abstract

822,598. Fluid heaters; tube supports BORN, S., BORN, H. J., MARTIN, V., CANTRELL, J. F., BORN, N. R., and DANIEL, J. L., [trading as BORN ENGINEERING CO.]. Oct. 21, 1957, No. 32809/57. Classes 64(1) and 64(3) A fluid heater comprises side walls, a floor, and a top enclosure together defining a combustion space which is divided into two zones by a bank of vertical tubes 30 in which the fluid is heated suspended within the combustion space, each zone extending vertically within the heater and having at the bottom thereof heat source e.g. burners. 27, the side walls of the heater being inclined such that each zone narrows from the bottom to the top thereof. In the form shown the bank comprises two rows of the tubes 30, the tubes in adjacent rows being relatively staggered and being spaced apart by a distance not greater than the outside diameter of a tube. The tube bank is suspended from a transverse beam 29 by rings 32 and hanger rods 31. The side walls of the combustion space are lined with refractory blocks 16 and are jacketed externally as shown to provide chambers 25 in which combustion air for the burners 27 is heated. The lower ends of the .tubes 30 extend below the heater floor 12 into a channel 36 incorporating removable plates 36a whereby tubes may be replaced when necessary. The combustion products from the burners pass from the upper end of the heater through damper controlled outlets leading to a stack 20. The tubes may be interconnected at their ends by bends which are preferably detachable, or groups of the tubes may be interconnected in parallel between the inlet and outlet manifolds 34, 35.
