949,758. Liquid and gas heaters. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS. Nov. 28, 1962, No. 44939/62. Headings F4A and F4S. In a fluid heater comprising an enclosure having a lower radiant heating zone and an upper convection heating zone, the lower zone is bounded by a number of curved wall sections 1 which oppose each other, thus forming a linear series of interconnected cylinder-like heating chambers whilst the top of each section is connected by an inwardly tapering wall 5 to a vertical wall 6, the vertical walls forming the straight side walls of the upper zone. A series of top walls 7 form the roof of the upper zone, the enclosure being completed by end walls 12 and a floor 10. The sections which may be prefabricated, consist of steel plates lined with a refractory material 9. They are interconnected by welding or bolting to the flanges of beams 3 and columns 2, the latter being secured to a foundation 23 by base-plates 4. Each of the arcuate sections 1 is provided with vertically spaced, individually controllable burners 17 supplied with oil or gas from headers 18, the burners being designed to direct flame only along the refractory wall surfaces at the side of and above each burner to provide uniform radiant heating for a fluid heating tube bank 13 located between the sections. Hot gases rise into the convection zone 14 in which is located a further bank 15 of fluid heating tubes, the gases discharging through a stack 8.
