887,722. Screw elevators. WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK BAD DUBEN VEB. June 20, 1958, No. 19801/58. Class 78 (1). A vertical screw conveyer 17 (Fig. 1) for raising articles made of magnetic substances and of definite geometric shapes, e.g. balls, is surrounded by a casing 19 in or on the walls of which is secured an electromagnet 22. The screw is made preferably of a diamagnetic substance (e.g. a plastic such as P.V.C. or polyethylene or glass fibre reinforced polyester), and the casing of ferromagnetic material. The articles pass into the casing from a hopper 21 and are discharged from it through a shoot 23. Vertical slots are formed diametrically opposite to each other in the walls of the casing. The outlet from the hopper 21 extends into the lower end of one of them and the pole shoes of the electromagnet 22 extend into the other and are insulated therefrom. In a modification, a permanent magnet system arranged in the form of a spiral is inserted in the walls of the casing, and in another modification the magnets are secured to machined surfaces on the outside of the casing. The top of the casing may be enlarged and contain leafspring strippers secured to the shaft 16 which press each article outwards and into an aperture leading to the shoot 23. The strip is driven by an electric motor 6 through an infinitely variable gear 5, worm gearing 4, 7 and a single-tooth clutch 13, 13<SP>1</SP>. The lower slidable part 13 is associated with a switch 15 for the circuit of the motor.
