[Also in Group XXIX] A valve or tap comprises gear-like means between an operating member and a carrier for a closure member whereby the closure member can be moved axially of a liquid outlet. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 2 and 3, a tubular carrier 1 of the closure member 16 is provided with racks 10 and slides on an inner post 4, which is surrounded by an outer collar 5. The collar 5 is provided with two slots which contain rollers 9, each roller being formed with a worm gear engaging the rack 10 and axial grooves engaged by axial teeth of a sleeve 12. The sleeve 12 is held in position by a screw pin 14 engaging a slot 15 and rotation of the sleeve 12 by a handle 23 raises or lowers the closure member from the end of a supply pipe 3, fluid flowing past vanes 21 on a closure support member 20. Owing to the substantial ratio of the diameter of the sleeve 12 to the roller 9, the closure member is moved a large distance for a small rotation of the sleeve 12. In a modification, shown in Fig. 8, the rollers 9 are replaced by rollers 35 formed with a worm screw engaging the racks on a closure carrier 37 and pinions 36 on the top of the rollers which engage teeth on a cylindrical sleeve 33. The valve is threaded at 34 for attachment to the body of an ordinary domestic tap.
