Abstract
887,556. Determination of moisture content of paper &c. BELOIT IRON WORKS. Feb. 27, 1958 [March 6, 1957], No. 6426/58. Class 96. [Also in Groups XXXVI and XL (b)] The moisture-content of a paper web is determined by measuring the amount of microwave power absorbed by passage along a surface of the web, preferably at a wavelength strongly absorbed by water and only slightly by paper, e.g. 1.35 cm. Microwaves generated at 10 are directed at 13 along a guide comprising a wire or bar 15 embedded in a solid dielectric 16. Part of the latter is cut away to allow the web to lie adjacent to the wire at 18. Power detectors 20 and 21 are coupled to the guide, and the difference of their outputs gives a measure of the power absorbed by the body. A comparative test can be made on a completely dry web, or the apparatus may be initially calibrated in this way.
