Abstract

887,489. Making brushes and brooms. LOCHER, L. May 9, 1958 [Nov. 11, 1957; Nov. 14, 1957], No. 14933/58. Class 87(2). A mould plate 11 carrying depressions 12 for the moulding of bristle bundle heads has directly above it a bristle apportioning plate 8 which possesses openings 9 corresponding in number and diameter to the bundles and coinciding with the depressions 12, and a bristle container 3 with a floor 5 which may be opened so as to drop the bristles 4 into the depressions which are first filled with moulding resin, e.g. phenol or polyester resin. Between the container 3 and floor 5 is a bristle directer 2 shaped according to the outlines of the apportioning plate 8. When bundle heads with diameters greater than those of the bundles are required, the mould plate 11 is constructed in two parts which meet in a horizontal plane bisecting the mould cavities. The mould and apportioning plates and the bristle container and directer are made from transparent elastic and non-elastic synthetic plastic materials respectively. If desired, the mould plate may be constructed as the brush body, the bundle heads being moulded so as to be exchangeably connected in shape-locking fashion within it. In one modification, a single tool plate is used which serves both for the apportionment of the bristles and for the moulding of the bundle heads. The projections 31 of this single tool plate, Fig. 11, may be undercut at the bottom to allow room for plastic jackets 41 which are provided with projections 42 for connection with handles 43 when a plurality of brushes having plastic jackets are required. In further modifications, the moulding plate may be provided with core pieces for the formation of cavities between the bristles and a multi-part pre-apportioner may be arranged over the apportioning and mould plates, the different parts of which are usable separately from one another so that it is possible to secure bristles of different material in the same brush body. The walls of the pre-apportioner may be adjustable in their inclination to each other. For the production of any desired arrangement of bristle bundles, an interchangeable intermediate distributer is inserted between the bristle holder and the mould plate and is provided with bores distributed according to the desired bundle arrangement, being shut off from the bristle holder and base plate by slidable intermediate floors.
