Abstract

An insert for a ferrule of a paint brush is a moulding of plastics material 13. The moulding, in use, fits inside the ferrule 12 and has a sleeve portion which surrounds the end portion of the handle 11 of the paint brush located therein. In the preferred form the insert has a flange determining its depth of entry and a closed end having an arrangement of holes forming an anchor for the knot of bristle or other filling. The insert is particularly desirable for large wall brushes. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Paint brushes and ferrule inserts therefor This invention relates to paint brushes and ferrule inserts therefor.
Paint brushes, in general, consist of a metal ferrule interconnecting a suitable knot of bristle or other filling and a handle which may be made of plastics or wood. Normally the bristle knot is first pushed through the ferrule and then its end set in the ferrule, before the handle is fixed therein.
It is known to provide an insert for the ferrule which consists of a bent metal strip which slides into the ferrule to form a transverse partition wall having an arrangement of holes. The wall serves as an anchor to which the knot of bristle is attached, the setting compound being poured into the ferrule and passing through the holes in the partition wall.
In a specific instance, a traditional wall brush has the knot of bristle set in the ferrule with a cement, now usually epoxy resin. The bristle knot is further secured in the ferrule by drilling through the ferrule, bristle and resin setting, and inserting nails which are clenched over on the reverse side.
The ferrule is usually 1" (25 mm) thick to accommodate the bristle knot, but-the required handle, which is conventionally a lacquered wooden handle, is:" to T5,, (1221 to 15 mm) thick.
In order to put the handle into the ferrule, the shaped handle is reduced slightly in thickness at its widest end over a length of " to provide shouiders for wood strips which are secured thereto bringing the effective thickness at this point up to 1". The handle is then lacquered by dipping but it is not practical to dip over the side strips as this causes "runs". The lacquer is therefore stopped about " short of the side strips.
On assembling the brush, the handle is fitted into the ferrule and aligned so that the side strips are flush with the adjacent end of the ferrule. Nails are driven through the ferrule, side strips and into the body of the handle. Finally, a paint line in a contrasting colour is applied by hand along the faces of the side strips and over the unlacquered portion of the handle.
It will be appreciated that the manufacture of such wall brushes in this way is complicated by the necessity to build up the handle, to align the handle with the ferrule before the handle is fixed by nails, and the subsequent application of a paint line to cover the unlacquered portion of the handle.
According to the invention there is provided an insert for a ferrule of a paint brush, comprising a moulding of plastics material, the moulding, in use, fitting inside the ferrule and having a sleeve portion which surrounds the end portion of the handle of the paint brush located therein.
Preferably the sleeve portion has a flange at one end to locate and control its depth of entry into the ferrule.
It is also preferred that means are provided which locate and control the depth of entry of the handle into the insert and thereby its relation with the ferrule. In this case the handle does not have .to be aligned with the ferrule before the handle is fixed in the ferrule, e.g. by nails or adhesive.
The sleeve portion is preferably closed at its inner end, which closed end is apertured to allow the passage therethrough of a setting compound for the knot of bristle or other filling. The closed end of the insert may comprise the abovementioned means for locating and controlling the depth of entry of the handle therein.
Preferably the closed end of the insert has an arrangement of holes. These holes are preferably tapered whereby wedges of setting compound are formed therein which assist the setting compound to anchor the bristle or filling.
The invention also provides a paint brush having a ferrule and an insert therefor as defined above.
By way of example, a specific embodiment in accordance with the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an elevation of a large wall paint brush; Figure 2 is a section along line 2-2 in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side elevation of the ferrule insert of the brush of Figure 1, partly cut away; Figure 4 is a plan view of the ferrule insert of Figure 3; and Figure 5 is a section along line 5-5 in Figure 4.
Referring to the drawings, a large paint brush intended for painting walls comprises a knot of bristle or other filling 10, a wooden handle 11 and an interconnecting metal ferrule 12. The bristle or filling 10 and the ferrule 1 2 have a thickness of 1", 111 whilst the handle 11 is thinner, e.g. 3M, ", and of even thickness throughout its length. The ferrule has two peripheral ribs 1 8 and the handle is lacquered over its whole length.
Within the ferrule 12 at the handle end is a hollow or cored out moulded insert 13 of plastics material which serves two main purposes. Firstly to provide a snug fit for the handle 11 in the ferrule, and secondly to provide a partition wall to which the bristle or filling 10 is anchored. To this end the insert has a closed end providing a base 14 and a surrounding wall or sleeve portion 1 5 having a rim or flange 1 6 which controls the depth of entry of the insert into the ferrule. The base 1 4 has a desired arrangement of holes 1 7 which are convergent in the direction of the bristle 1 0.
To assemble the paint brush, the bristle 10 is fed into the ferrule 12. The insert 1 3 is then fitted into the ferrule, and the face of the base 1 4 of the insert adjacent the bristle will now be close to but not touching the butt end of the bristle. Sufficient epoxy resin 1 9 or other setting compound is poured into the insert. This resin flows through the holes 1 7 and penetrates the butt end of the bristle, the resin also flowing into the ribs 1 8 of the ferrule and remaining in the holes forming wedges therein. On the resin setting hard, the bristle 10 is securely anchored to the base 1 4 of the insert 1 3.
The handle 11 is then pushed into the insert 13 until it abuts the closed end and two nails 20 are driven through the ferrule 12, insert 13 and handle 11 from each side. The provision of recesses 21 in the external surface of the insert 13 are found to resist the tendency for the nails to bounce off the ferrule.
If desired the internal surface of the insert may be provided with a step or other means which limit the depth of entry of the handle prior to the handle end engaging the base of the insert or the epoxy resin poured therein.
The main advantages achieved by providing the ferrule insert 13 are that the handle does not have to be built-up at its end which is attached to the ferrule and the application of a paint line to cover the exposed, unlacquered portion of the handle is avoided. Instead of the latter, it is found that the same general appearance of a paint line may be provided by the colour of the ferrule insert.
Also for securely anchoring the bristle, it is no longer necessary to drill through the ferrule, bristle and epoxy resin or to nail through and clench on the reverse side.
A further advantage is that greater tolerances at the handle end which is inserted into the ferrule may be acceptable.
Whilst the above embodiment has been directed at a specialist paint brush which is largely required by the professional decorator, it will be appreciated that the invention is also applicable in the manufacture of more generally used paint brushes. Moreover, the paint brush may have a filling other than pure bristle and may have a handle made of plastics material instead of wood.
The handle may also be held in the ferrule insert by adhesive instead of nails.
