Abstract

Shaped articles of thermosetting artificial plastic are sheathed by flame-spraying them with a plurality of layers of metals or alloys having melting-points at least 400 DEG C. above the decomposition point of the plastic, the first layer having a coefficient of thermal expansion greater than that of the plastic and the succeeding layer or layers having a coefficient or coefficients of thermal expansion lower than that of the plastic. The article may be cooled before or during the spraying. Metals and alloys which may be applied are Al, Cu, Fe, bronze, brass, and alloys of Fe with Cr. Ni or Co. In the example, a phenol-formaldehyde tube is (a) first sprayed with Al and then with Fe, and (b) first sprayed with Al and then with successive layers of Cu and Fe. The sheathed article may be further coated with Cr, Ni, Zn, Cd, a plastic, lacquer or dyestuff.
