Abstract
887,189. Shaft couplings. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. (Ford Motor Co.). July 27, 1960, No. 26085/60. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] In a slip joint comprising telescoped driving and driven elements 11, 12 having intermeshing splines 13, 15 capable of maintaining a driving connection between the elements upon limited relative axial displacement thereof, the splines 15 are spaced inwardly of one end of the element 12 and a tubular sealing-member 21 encompasses a portion 17 of the element 11 to one side of the splines 13, sealing means such as lips 25 on the member 21 internally engaging the element 12 between the splines 15 and the end of the element in order to isolate the intermeshing splines from lubricant diluents. The elements 11, 12 comprise, respectively, the transmission output shaft and the drive-shaft slip yoke of a motor vehicle. Each of the sealing lips 25 has one side 28 normal to the longitudinal axis of the seal and the other side made up of inclined reinforcing portions 31, 32. The seal is retained on the element 11 by a flat, spring steel ring 22 interposed between shoulders 19, 33 on the element and seal respectively.
