Abstract
1,125,739. Universal joints. EATON YALE & TOWNE Inc. 6 Dec., 1966 [6 Dec., 1965], No. 54620/66. Heading F2U. In a universal joint having end members 14, 15 connected by helical spring torque-transmitting means 16, a centring means allowing relative axial movement of the end members 14, 15 comprises nested female and male spherically-surfaced bearing members 30, 35, respectively secured, as by press-fitting, in a counterbore of an extension of the end member 15 and formed on the end of a plunger 36 axially slidable in a cylindrical axial bore 24 of the end member 14. The end member 15 may be drivingly connected and axially slidable with respect to a further rotary member by a spline connection. In a double joint arrangement shown, particularly for connecting the drive-shafts 8, 9 of tandem axles 10, 11 of an automotive truck, the two joints 6, 7 comprise helical spring torquetransmitting means 16, 52 secured in annular grooves 23, 26, 45, 62 of end members 14, 15, 42, 60. The outer end members 14, 42 are flanged and bolted to the shafts 8, 9 and the inner end members 15, 60 are drivingly connected by the interengagement of internal splines 34 in the end member 15 and external splines 71 on an extension 70 of the end member 60, this spline connection permitting substantial relative axial movement of the shafts 8, 9. Each male bearing member 35 is substantially the same diameter as its plunger 36 and connected thereto by a neck portion 37 of reduced diameter to accommodate the adjacent end edges of the end member 15 during severe angular misalignment. Flexible boots 40, 73 retaining lubricant and excluding foreign matter are secured by bands 41, 75, 74 to the helical spring means and the end members. The outer ends of the end members 14, 42 are counterbored to receive lubricant sealing plugs 76, 77, the lubricant flowing through slots 80, 81 into the joint interiors. A lubricant sealing " O " ring 82 engaging the extension 70 is retained by a cap 83 in the end of an extension 33 of the end member 15.
