Abstract

886,918. Welding by pressure. MARSDEN, A. Jan. 18, 1960 [Jan. 26, 1959], No. 2768/59. Class 83 (4). [Also in Groups XIII and XXV] A stud for welding by one end to a metal surface to project therefrom comprises two rods 1, 2, Fig. 1, e.g. of semicircular cross-section, lying side by side and secured together by a sleeve 3 spaced from the other end of the stud whereby the rods can be splayed apart at that end. A plurality of the studs are used to secure a refractory or other lining to the metal surface. In a modification, the stud has two collars 6, 7, Fig. 4, and the rods are bent at rightangles beyond collar 6 to form a platform. A wire mesh 8 may be secured to the platform to retain the lining 9. In another arrangement, the stud comprises at its welding end, a cylindrical rod of mild steel and at its other end semicircular rods of a corrosion-resistant alloy joined together and to the mild steel rod by a collar. The mild steel rod may be replaced by two semi-circular rods. The or each sleeve may be shrunk on to the rods.
