Abstract
886,466. Preparing boron electrolytically. WEIL, W. M. March 3, 1960 [March 16, 1959], No. 7530/60. Class 41. Elemental boron is produced by electrolysis of molten potassium fluoborate containing up to 20% of B 2 O 3 . In examples, up to 5% of B 2 O 3 is dissolved in molten KBF 4 contained in a graphite crucible, the lower concentration of the boron oxide lowering the viscosity of the electrolyte to a reasonable level, and an iron plate is used as cathode. A temperature of 550‹ to 750‹ C. is maintained and a voltage of 7 to 8.6 v., at a C.D. of about 70 A.S.F. The boron deposited on the cathode may be removed by first protecting the hot cathode with a sodium chloride coating and in an inert gas, and when cool, leaching with water-containing acid, to loosen the deposit from the cathode, and purify the boron. Specifications 677,392 and 684,572 are referred to.
