In a multi-storey garage, the lift and the parking bays are provided with freely rotating rollers or with freely running endless belts over which a car can be pushed. The garage comprises inlet and outlet bays 6, 7, Fig. 2, on the ground floor above which are parking bays each accommodating three cars, the parking bays opening into lift shafts 5. The inlet bays 6 are provided with rows 11 of rollers 12, Fig. 3, separated by a channel 10, and with a device, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), consisting of rows of bars which may be raised between the rollers 12 to project above them to permit a car to be driven on to the bars and then lowered on to the rollers. Each lift, Fig. 6, supports a trolley 21 provided with rollers 12 and a channel 26, the trolley 21 being connected to an endless band 23 supporting a counterweight 25. In operation, a car to be parked is driven on to the raised bars between the rollers 12 of an inlet bay, is lowered on to the rollers and is then pushed on to the aligned trolley 21 either manually or by means of an electricallypowered carriage, Fig. 7, running in the channels 10, 26. The carriage comprises a wheeled chassis 27 provided with pivoted arms 34 which engage, in their full line position, the wheels of a car and which may be pivoted to the broken line position by rotation of a screw 29 carrying a nut 32 connected to the arms through links 31, 33. The right-hand arms 34 are mounted on a slider 27A which may be moved along the chassis 27 by means of an endless chain. All the movements of the carriage, the slider 27A and the arms 34 may be controlled from a remote control desk.
