Abstract

886,015. Presses for separating liquids from solids. ROSE, DOWNS & THOMPSON Ltd. March 17, 1958 [March 19, 1957], No. 8922/57. Class 46. A feed worm 1 is aligned with, and independently mounted from, a compression worm 2, both being located in a common reticulated chamber 5. Preferably the worms are cantilevered into the chamber from opposite ends, as shown. Oil is discharged from a variable gear pump 55 at 56 and passes first to a hydraulic motor 58 and thence to a hydraulic motor 62, returning to the pump at 57, valves 60 and 64 being closed and valve 66 being open. Preferably, however, the oil is pumped to the motors in parallel, valves 60 and 64 being open and valve 66 closed. In the latter case the motor 62 taking the lesser load will take more oil and speed up, while the motor 58 taking the greater load will take less oil. In Fig. 1 (not shown), worm 2 is driven by a motor through spur gearing, which also drives an interrupted-helical cake conveyer and a worm oil conveyer mounted on connected shafts. The feed worm 1 is driven by a separate motor through worm gearing. Each of the shafts 3 and 4 is hollow and encloses a pipe through which water is pumped from the driven end to the free end, the water returning along the space between pipe and shaft. The compressed cake is discharged between an axially slidable sleeve 25, mounted on a collar 21, and a conical boss 19 keyed to the shaft 4. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 777,472.
