Abstract
885,635. Preparing fluoro-carbons and calcium metal. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. May 5, 1960 [May 8, 1959], No. 15852/60. Class 41. Saturated fluoro-carbons are made by electrolysing molten calcium fluoride in O-free conditions with a carbon anode and molten tin or tin alloy as cathode on which metallic calcium is deposited. An inert gas is used, temperatures of 1400 to 1600 C. and a voltage under 15 v. and preferably less than 10 v. Tin alloys, with Al, Bi, Si, Pb in monor amounts may be used as cathode. In a suitable apparatus, a cylindrical chamber 10 of stainless steel or alumina, contains a graphite crucible 15, holding the molten tin cathode 16 which may be confined by a retainer ring of boron nitride 17. A water-cooled brass lid 11 is provided with an inlet 12 and outlet 13 for an inert gas, and an anode assembly consisting of a consumable carbon tube anode 20, supported in bushings 21 of P.T.F.E., and an inner electrode 22 of graphite or tungsten. The graphite crucible is protected from corrosion by a " skull " of solid calcium fluoride 25, having an outer cooling jacket. The gases evolved through a port A are cooled in liquid nitrogen, and consist of 60 to 90 mols. per cent of carbon tetrafluoride mixed with minor amounts of hexafluor-ethane, silicon fluorides, and traces of CO 2 and other fluoro-carbons. In an alternative apparatus, the carbon tube anode 20 ends above the level of molten calcium fluoride and is provided with a cylindrical shield made of boron nitride, of wider diameter than the anode tube and projects downwards through the electrolyte and into the molten tin cathode. The calcium fluoride used should be dry, free of oxides, and in powder form. U.S.A. Specification 1,552,143 is referred to.
