Abstract

A depleted aqueous chemical nickel-plating solution of the nickel cation-hypophosphite anion type which contains undesirable phosphite is regenerated by adding thereto alkaline earth cations and hydroxyl ions so as to precipitate alkaline earth phosphite without precipitating substantial amounts of alkaline earth hypophosphite or of any nickel compound, removing the precipitated alkaline earth phosphite, and then adding to the resulting solution nickel cations, hypophosphite anions and hydrogen ions to produce a plating solution of desired composition. Thus, a depleted solution made up from nickel sulphate, sodium hypophosphite, lactic ions and propionic ions, which contains undesirable phosphite and has a pH below 5,5, is (a) cooled to 0 DEG -5 DEG C. to crystallize out sodium sulphate, (b) filtered to remove the sodium sulphate, (c) treated with calcium sulphate and calcium hydroxide (or oxide or carbonate) to raise the pH to 5,5-7,0 and to precipitate calcium phosphite, (d) filtered to remove the calcium phosphite, (e) optionally treated with sodium fluoride to precipitate calcium fluoride which is then filtered out, and (f) reconstituted by addition thereto of nickel sulphate, sodium hypophosphite, lactic acid and propionic acid together with sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide to obtain the desired pH of 4,5-4,7. Other alkaline earth cations which may be used are barium and strontium, e.g. as the sulphate or chloride. The solution may be used in a continuous plating system and regenerated as a whole or continuously.
