885,331. Roller bearings. LAMM, A. M. July 23, 1959 [July 24, 1958], No. 25402/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 12 (1). In a rolling mill, the mill roll has a reduced end which is an easy fit in the inner race ring of a roller bearing, and the inner surface of the race ring, and/or the contacting outer surface of the reduced end of the roll, is formed with one or more helical or wavy grooves to accommodate a small quantity of lubricant sufficient only to prevent abrasion and wear during creep. The groove formation is such that it includes adjacent opposed groove portions which are sufficiently close to tend to ensure that the axial length of any cracks created in the grooved surface during working is only a small fraction of the axial length of the bearing surface. Preferably the groove formation is in the inner cylindrical surface of the inner race ring and reduces the cylindrical surface by about 20%.
