Abstract

An electrically conductive grinding wheel or other abrasive article is comprised of abrasive grains (e.g. fused alumina), an organic bond (e.g. phenolic resin), a filler of solid particles of electrically conductive material (e.g. graphite and/or magnetite), and an electrically conductive liquid selected from formamide, dimethyl or diethyl formamide, or mixtures thereof. The conductivity of the wheel or article is at least that equal to a resistivity of 1 megohm. cm. A mix for the manufacture of grinding wheels or abrasive articles consists of the above ingredients, namely:-an uncured organic bond mixed with abrasive grains and with electrically conductive solid particles distributed through it, and an electrically conductive liquid as above. In the method of making, the following example is given:-fused alumina is wetted with a plasticiser (e.g. dimethyl formamide) and then is mixed with a bond containing granular phenolic resin, powdered graphite and calcium oxide (as a dehydrator), until the plasticised abrasive has picked up all of the bond possible, the graphite being well distributed. The mixture is compacted in a mould and heated to mature the bond, the water, which is liberated on curing, being absorbed by the calcium oxide. The wheel produced are useful for controlling grinding operations (see Group XXIII) by incorporation in an arm of a capacitance bridge control circuit (see Group XXXVII).
