884,844. Gear - finishing. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. Feb. 3, 1960 [March 23, 1959], No. 3817/60. Class 83 (3). A method of honing a gear at crossed or parallel axes consists in using a gear-like tool such that the teeth of the work gear engage the bottoms of the tooth-spaces of the tool. The tool may be made of equal parts of an epoxy resin and a silica filler, with an aliphatic polyamine, such as diethylene triamine, as an accelerator. The gear G, on a table 42 pivoted at 48, is raised into contact with the tool H by a fluid-pressure device 68 the piston of which may be held by a fluid-pressure operated friction pad while relative traverse is effected along the gear axis. The radial force between the gear and hone may be up to 125 lbs. and is mostly taken by the engagement between the tops of the gear teeth and the roots of the hone teeth. The diameter of the hone is reduced periodically, to prevent the tops of the hone teeth contacting the bottoms of the gear tooth spaces. The hone is rotated to give a pitch line velocity of about 850 <SP>1</SP>/min. The gear acts upon the hone somewhat as a crushing roller to maintain the correct shape of the hone. Until several gears have been finished, the hone may not contact the bottom of the gear tooth spaces.
