Abstract

864,688. Gear honing tools. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. Jan. 22, 1960 [March 2, 1959], No. 2433/60. Class 60. [Also in Group XXII] A gear honing tool H has teeth 10 with involute flanks 12 ; to eliminate the formation of a shoulder on the flank due to wear of the tool, the portion of the tooth below the start of active profile 16 is undercut at 18, the shape of the undercut being such that for each flank 12a, 12b, 12c resulting from wear, the intersection 16a, 16b, 16c of the flank with the undercut is the start of active profile for that flank. The operative portion of the tooth comprises abrasive grains distributed throughout a resin, e.g. epoxy resin. The teeth 10 are in tight mesh with the tooth 14 of one of a succession of work gears W. The hone may be of such helix angle that it operates with its axis parallel to the axis of the work gears, but preferably the helix angle of the hone is such that the axes of the hone and gears are crossed at a small angle, e.g. 3-30 degrees.
