Abstract
A solid detergent composition which, when dissolved in water, may be used for washing and bleaching fibrous materials comprises (1) a soap, e.g. the sodium or potassium salts of fatty acids, or other detergent, e.g. sodium hydrocarbon sulphonates, (2) at least one alkali-metal monopersulphate and (3) at least one of the following alkaline water-soluble extenders, i.e. alkali-metal phosphates, silicates and carbonates, with or without at least one alkaline water-soluble boron compound, e.g. borax, in amount not exceeding the total weight of phosphate, silicate, and carbonate extender, the proportions of the components being such that, when the composition is dissolved in water, the resulting solution has a pH of 8-12. The aqueous bleaching and washing solutions which have pH values of 8-12, comprises a soap or other detergent, monopersulphuric acid or at least one alkali-metal monopersulphate and at least one alkaline water-soluble extender and contain 30-700 parts per million of active oxygen, calculated on the weight of the solution. Suitable alkaline extenders are meta- and ortho-silicates, tripolyphosphates, pyro-, ortho- and meta-phosphates, normal carbonates, bicarbonates and sesqui-carbonates. The alkali metal monopersulphates may contain the corresponding sulphates and bisulphates in the mole ratios of MHSO5:MHSO4:M2SO4 of 2:1:1. The compositions, which preferably contain at least 1% of active oxygen, may also contain anti-caking agents, e.g. magnesium oxide, hydroxide or carbonate. Specifications 172,667 and 797,701 are referred to.ALSO:A solid oxidising composition which, when dissolved in water may be used for bleaching fibrous materials, e.g. cotton, wool, linen, silk and polyester fibres, comprises at least one alkali-metal monopersulphate and at least one of the following alkaline water-soluble extenders, i.e. alkali-metal phosphates, silicates and carbonates, with or without at least one alkaline watersoluble boron compound, e.g. borax, in amount not exceeding the total weight of phosphate, silicate and carbonate extender, the proportions of the components being such that, when the composition is dissolved in water, the resulting solution has a pH of. 8-12. The aqueous bleaching solutions which have pH values of 8-12, comprise monopersulphuric acid or at least one alkali-metal monopersulphate and at least one alkaline water-soluble extender and contain 30-700 parts per million of active oxygen, calculated on the weight of the solution. Suitable alkaline extenders are meta- and ortho-silicates, tripolyphosphates, pyro-, ortho- and meta-phosphates, normal carbonates, bicarbonates and sesqui-carbonates. The alkali-metal monopersulphates may contain the corresponding sulphates and bisulphates in the mole ratios of MHSO5 : MHSO4 M2SO4 of 2 : 1 : 1. The compositions, which preferably contain at least 1% of active oxygen, may also contain anticaking agents, e.g. magnesium oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, and a soap, e.g. the sodium or potassium salts of fatty acids, or other detergent, e.g. sodium hydrocarbon sulphonates. The fibres may be treated with the aqueous bleaching solution at a temperature between 120 DEG F. and the boiling point of the solution. Specifications 172,667 and 797,701 are referred to.
