[Also in Group XII] A compound refractory brick (see Group XII) is moulded by placing jacket material on the bottom pressure plate 33a of a mould 33, adding a cylindrical insert 31 filled with refractory, covering with a further layer of jacket material and compressing between plates 33a, 33b to a pressure of at least 1000 kilograms/square cm. The insert takes up the elliptical form shown in Fig. 5. The insert may be initially of rectangular section pressing out to a rhombic section, Figs. 12-14 (not shown), or a number of inserts may be used Figs. 17-19 (not shown).
