Abstract

The surface area of hydrated finely divided silica, which has been precipitated from aqueous alkali metal silicate solution, is stabilized by heating the silica for a period of 0,5-25 mins. at a temperature of above 100 DEG C., preferably 120 DEG -300 DEG C., in a pressure vessel as an aqueous dispersion having a pH above 5. The hot dispersion may be cooled by dilution with water at a temperature below 100 DEG C. The surface area of the silica treated may be 10-200 sq. m/gm. and its particle size may be 0,015-0,2 micron. The treated silica may be washed with hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric or acetic acid. Specification 745,822 is referred to.
